Partnering local fire departments identify neighborhoods within their community (i.e. neighborhoods with a lot of children, financially challenged, had a recent fire in the neighborhood, no hydrants, etc.). Then, teams of Safe Kids volunteers and firefighters go door to door in those neighborhoods to check for working smoke alarms and replace smoke alarms when needed. Approximately 60-70% of homes reached through this effort do not have sufficient amount of working smoke alarms in their homes.
